Physically Distanced, Creatively Connected

This series of artworks, commissioned by GOSH Arts, were created in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. From clapping for carers to inspiring resilience, they reflect evolving themes and feelings about the pandemic as it happened. These artistic responses changed and adapted to support our patients, families and staff over the course of 2020–21; but gratitude, kindness and connection emerge again and again.

Work currently on display in the Hospital Street corridor next to the Premier Inn Clinical Building.

'Clap for Our Carers' by Jacqueline Colley, 2020. This commission coincided with the start of the weekly applause that ran across the UK during the first national lockdown, beginning in March 2020.
'Make Some Noise' by Adam Herbert, 2020. The weekly clap for our carers was often a moment when people came out onto their streets, balconies, windows and front steps, and made noise with whatever they had to hand.
'Positive Vibrations' by Marcus Walters, 2020. This vibrant illustration is about inspiring resilience to keep going and stay positive during the Covid-19 pandemic.
'Shine Light' by Chila Burman, 2020. This artwork contains uplifting messages to encourage us to be at our brightest and most positive. The octagon is a symbol used by many cultures throughout history to represent rebirth, regeneration, transitions and new directions.
'Paper Gift Exchange' by Marysa Dowling, 2020. Marysa invited people to create paper gifts to exchange with others over social media during the first lockdown. This work reminds us how important small acts of kindness are, while also encouraging connection and communication through simple acts of making.
'Our Hands Have Clapped' Artwork by Abigail Hunt, words by Cecilia Knapp, 2020. Abigail’s collage of hands focuses our attention on the many roles hands have played during the pandemic – from clapping, to healing and, because of masks and PPE, a greater role in communication.
'Apart but Together at Heart' by Ashwin Chacko, 2020. Many of us have not been able to see family or hug those close to us. This illustration reminds us that although we are apart it is important to stay connected.
'Breathe with Nature' by Fabric Lenny, 2021 This triptych of prints celebrates the benefits of positive interactions with the natural world. Here we have ‘Seaside’.
