Good Hope Works at GOSH
17 May 2017, 12:53 p.m.
Good Hope Works is an exciting creative research project facilitated by GOSH Arts and undertaken by artist Joanna Brinton. The project has engaged staff from across Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and will culminate in the installation of a permanent artwork at the entrance of the hospital.
Good Hope Works has included periods of research and artist-led workshops with staff and volunteers. During the workshops, Joanna and participants have been working together to explore ideas of diversity, shared values and personal experiences of working at GOSH.
The ideas and outcomes from these sessions will be used to develop an artwork for the flagpole on the exterior of the Paul O’Gorman Building, which will celebrate the hard work of every member of staff who works at GOSH.
“GOSH is a very special place and one that I feel privileged to get to know through its staff,” says Joanna.
“Over the last few months, I have been meeting different groups who work in the hospital and inviting them to take me on a journey as part of their work day, we talk as we walk and focus our attention on the subject of work and care.
“In the words of one of the porters who I shadowed last month, 'People make this place’. I hope my work here will bring their voices to the fore.”
Deputy Director Development and Property Services Stephanie Williamson explains: “Good Hope Works is a fantastic way to engage staff in the work GOSH Arts do and offer them opportunities to be creative at work, which can positively impact on their wellbeing.
“The project and resulting artwork will show that every member of staff is integral to the hospital’s success and will celebrate the diverse skills that staff from across the Trust bring to GOSH.”
