Getting referred to the Nephrology department
As a tertiary care hospital, all children who attend Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) must be referred via local hospital consultants, community paediatricians or, in exceptional circumstances, via a GP.
Partnership with local services
In every case the care of children is shared between the referring hospital and the specialist service at GOSH.
An effective partnership, with continued local hospital involvement is essential for patients with complex abnormalities as they will benefit from services which are better integrated with the local community and schools.
This partnership allows the local services to use their considerable skills and knowledge and for the GOSH service to provide their specialist services and expertise for the benefit of a large number of children.
Collaboration with other departments
The department of paediatric nephrology works closely with a number of other medical and surgical subspecialties within GOSH.
These include the departments of paediatric urology and surgery, rheumatology, oncology and radiology (including interventional radiology).
There is a strong link between the department based at GOSH, the Institute of Child Health and the Nephrology Department at the Royal Free Hospital and University College London.
