Clinics and wards used by the Hand and Upper Limb Surgery department

The Hand and Upper Limb Surgery Department uses several wards at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).

Children undergoing hand surgery will usually be admitted to Puffin Ward before surgery and will then be looked after on one of our surgical wards, usually Peter Pan Ward after surgery.

The surgical team undertake twice daily ward rounds on Peter Pan Ward when they will review your child's progress and update you on any changes in their care.

Once your child is ready, they will be discharged home and a follow up appointment will be made. You will be given information prior to discharge on caring for your child after surgery (For example, our 'Looking after your child after hand and foot surgery' information sheet).

Outpatient clinics are held in the main outpatient department or in the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine adjacent to the main hospital.

Consultant clinics run every Wednesday afternoon and there is a registrar post-operative clinic on alternate Thursday afternoons.

Clinics are also attended by the hand therapist who will carry out functional assessment, prescribe exercise regimes and make splints if required.

Dressing clinics run by the clinical nurse specialists are held on Dinosaur Ward (Level 3 Cardiac Wing). Hand patients are usually seen on Wednesday mornings when the hand fellow and/or consultant are available if required.

Pre-Operative Assessment Clinics are run on Wednesday mornings. Children attending these clinics will also be given an appointment to see the consultant or hand fellow at the start of their afternoon outpatients clinic to allow them to have a final review prior to surgery.
