Clinics and wards used by the Endocrinology department
The following information may be useful in helping you and your child prepare for your visit to our department.
Wards
Squirrel Ward is our main inpatient ward and specialises in metabolic, endocrine and gastroenterology conditions. This ward is also a specialist centre for congenital hyperinsulinism (where the body produces too much insulin).
Kingfisher Ward is our investigations unit where a wide number of specialised tests are carried out. If your child is being admitted to Kingfisher Ward, this admission will have been planned with a clear idea of the investigations he or she needs.
We also provide endocrine support to Koala Ward, where the majority of our shared care neuro-oncology patients undergo neurosurgery.
Clinics
General endocrine and specialist clinics occur regularly covering a wide range of disorders, including congenital hyperinsulinism, haematology/ oncology neuroendocrine effects, hypopituitarism (e.g. septo-optic dysplasia and growth hormone deficiency), adrenal disorders (for example congenital adrenal hyperplasia), bone disorders, skeletal dysplasias (for example achondroplasia), thyroid disease (including congenital hypothyroidism), Turner syndrome, sex development and complex diabetes (including cystic fibrosis-related diabetes).
These clinics occur within a multidisciplinary setting involving numerous paediatric health professionals including other specialist paediatricians, endocrine and diabetes nurse specialists, surgeons, psychologists and dieticians. We also provide an outreach clinic service to 13 District General Hospitals in the Thames region and Gibraltar, Dubai, United Arab Emirates and Malta.
The Complex Diabetes Service at GOSH also forms part of the North Central London Paediatric Diabetes Network.
