How to refer to the Orthodontic department
GOSH Orthodontic Acceptance Criteria
- Patients who are referred for an opinion only and who are under the care of GOSH for pre-existing medical conditions can be seen for advice and treatment planning.
- Patients who are under a nationally commissioned package of care (Cleft, Craniofacial, Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) with macroglossia), those with Craniofacial Microsomia, Treacher Collins and other complex syndromes will be seen and considered for treatment.
- Patients with complex medical conditions that preclude them from having treatment elsewhere will be seen for advice, treatment planning and treatment if appropriate.
- Occasional referrals from the wards for inpatient management will be seen if at all possible.
- Examination of patients under General Anaesthesia (GA).
- Orthodontic opinions between specialities within the department.
- In instances where patients are referred for orthodontic extractions at GOSH under GA who cannot have a GA elsewhere for medical reasons, reference should be made to the separate Standard Operating Procedure regarding these patients.
Additional Information
- Cases may be planned at GOSH but delivered locally where appropriate
- Cases may be refused on the basis of Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) and Index of Orthognathic Functional Treatment Need (IOFTN)
- Referrals to the BWS service are made to the BWS MDT rather than directly to the dental department
