About us
Stones in the kidney system are uncommon in children. Our dedicated multidisciplinary team provides comprehensive care for children with urinary stones. We are one of the most experienced children’s stone units in Western Europe. We have expertise in management and prevention of stones, of varying complexity, in the urinary system for patients under 18 years of age.
Conditions we treat
- Stones in the kidneys, ureters or bladder
- Acutely obstructing stones in the urinary tract
- Diagnosis & management of underlying causes that increase risk of stone recurrence
- Metabolic conditions predisposing to stones including: Cystinuria
- Urinary stones can affect children with other significant diagnoses which we are experienced in managing here at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).
Our service has:
- Dedicated multi-disciplinary stones outpatient clinic to provide a combined nephrological (medical), urological (surgical) assessment.
- Specialist Radiology including Ultrasound, ultra-low dose computer tomography and DMSA-SPECT imaging.
- Modern OR-1 integrated operating theatre with state of the art equipment including for keyhole stone surgery a range of ureteroscopes and laser for stone disintegration. Learn more about endoscopic removal of kidney stones
- A mobile lithotripter service for Extra-corporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL).
- Monthly multi-disciplinary meetings to optimise management of complex cases.
