About the Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit
The Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital is the largest paediatric BMT centre in the UK.The unit provides a comprehensive haematopoietic stem cell transplant service for children with life-threatening conditions, and carries out around 100 transplant procedures each year.
Only 20 per cent of our patients have suitably matched family donors so many of these transplants are performed from one of the 15 million volunteer adult bone marrow or peripheral blood stem cell donors, or 500,000 cord blood donations, available worldwide.
Between 1981 and 2019, the number of transplant procedures performed by the unit increased from approximately 20 a year in the 1980s to approximately 120 in 2019.
