Answers
Questions you may have before your appointment at the Digital Hearing Aids Clinic
Is there any preparation for the appointment?
- Talk to your child about the upcoming hearing aid appointment.
- They will need to be awake for the hearing test, however, there are some tests and procedures we can do if they are asleep.
- Bring their hearing aids and any new earmoulds to the appointment.
What will happen in the appointment?
- You will be seen by an Audiologist(s) for a hearing assessment or for speech testing.
- An otoscope (light) will be used to look into your ear.
- Pressure check of the ear drum will be performed. An earpiece will play a long beep and a slight change in pressure will be experienced (like going through a tunnel in the car). This will be followed by loud beeping noises.
- Earmoulds will be checked for fit and comfort. New impressions may be taken if needed.
- We may listen to your child’s hearing aid in their ear using a soft fine tube which does not cause discomfort, to verify the fitting and to ensure the hearing aids are working well.
- During new fitting appointments the hearing aids will be programmed to the hearing loss and detailed instructions and information sheets will be provided regarding the hearing aids and how to use them and maintain them. We will also practice putting the hearing aids in the ear, and changing the batteries.
Are there any side effects or risks?
- Sound sensitivity: if your child is sensitive to particular sounds, such as loud beeps, please let the clinicians know and they will take care in keeping the sounds at a comfortable level.
- If your child is sensitive to touch or to procedures such as ear impressions in their ear, please let the audiologist know.
- If your child has a programable ventriculoperitoneal (PVP) shunt, please advise your audiologist so the necessary precautions can be taken.
How long will the appointment take?
The hearing assessment may take up to 90 minutes.
Who will we be seen by?
Audiologist(s)
Are we able to have a chaperone or interpreter?
Yes. Please try to inform us before your child’s appointment if you require a chaperone or interpreter so one can be booked in advance
Will we be seen straight away for our appointment?
We will do our best to inform you when you arrive of any delays to your appointment. Please check in on Ground Floor Reception of Sight and Sound Building upon arrival and inform reception if you need to leave for any periods of time.
Will we find out the results on the day?
The results of the appointment are discussed with you on the day, with a written report sent to you afterwards.
Can we get a second opinion?
Please let the clinicians know if you would like a second opinion and they will be happy to support you with a referral to an alternative service.
