Research and publications from the Anaesthesia department
The Anaesthesia Department is involved in a broad range of research. Current themes are listed below.
Research
Current themes include:
Anaesthesia and cardiac anaesthesia
total intra-venous anaesthesia for short painful procedures
cleft lip and palate surgery including international delivery of services
respiratory effects of drugs
assessment of induction drugs
cardiac bypass anaesthesia
pulmonary hypertension
Sedation
We have a unique interest in developing safe and effective sedation, focusing in particular on nurse-led sedation and sedation for patients undergoing chest drain removal and endoscopy.
Anxiety management
We are looking at helping reduce anxiety in children undergoing anaesthesia, in particular effective training in behavioural modification and management techniques, identification of anxious children and management of severe anxiety.
Resuscitation
We have developed and supported the training of paediatric resuscitation at Great Ormond Street Hospital, in the UK and abroad. We are studying in particular peri-operative intravenous fluids, choice of crystalloid and major haemorrhage.
Airway management
Our patient population allow us to perfect techniques for training in airway management, in particular developing and teaching skills and assessment of new techniques.
Assessing new technology
Another focus is assessment of new technology. We are developing a record of cooperation with industry looking at temperature control, continuous non invasive blood pressure, continuous non-invasive haemoglobin estimation and continuous trans-cutaneous CO2 monitoring.
Safety
We are interested in improving safety by developing systems for teams including handover to intensive care, crisis management using simulators, implementation of World Health Organisation surgical protocols and assessment of theatre checklists.
