Staff at Great Ormond Street Hospital Bake it Better for charity
27 Sep 2016, 5:03 p.m.
In the lead up to Bake it Better week, staff at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) took part in a charity bake off with the chance to impress special guest judge, former Celebrity MasterChef finalist and Coronation Street star Wendi Peters.Sixteen show-stopping cakes were entered from a variety of staff across the hospital with a host of different flavours and presentation styles.
“It’s the best selection of cakes we’ve ever seen,” said Hayley Richardson, Fundraising Manager at Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity. “It’s great to see budding bakers at the hospital getting involved in the fun and raising awareness for Bake it Better week,” Hayley added.
Among the selection of cakes entered to the challenge was a lemon and poppy seed profiterole cake, kransekake Norwegian cake, a chocolate pirate ship and a Tim Peake space-themed cake.
And the winner is...
The winning prize, a Pyrex hamper, was given to Melissa Springley from the Medical HR department, whose apricot and raspberry cake wowed Wendi with her beautifully delicate decorating skills and full-flavoured sponge.
“The sponge was amazing, and beautifully piped,” said Wendi. “I’ve loved every minute! It was so hard to choose but I had a lovely time tasting the cakes and meeting all the GOSH staff,” Wendi added.
As part of the event, members of staff from Stork hosted biscuit decorating stall for patients and cupcakes made by the hospital catering staff were sold in return for donations towards Bake it Better.
Bake it Better week is taking place from 17-23 October and asks people from across the UK to hold a bake sale and raise some dough for Great Ormond Street Hospital in their workplace, school or local community.
All of the money raised goes towards funding the most up-to-date equipment, ground-breaking research, family accommodation and contributes towards the refurbishment of the hospital.
