Great Ormond Street Hospital wins Patient Safety Award

Great Ormond Street Hospital's work to achieve Zero Harm, along with its role as a leader and innovator in the field of Patient Safety, has been recognised by the awarding of the Patient Safety in Paediatrics Award at the HSJ and Nursing Times 2013 Patient Safety and Care Integration Awards.

Teams across the hospital have worked together to build a culture of safety and accountability which has led to a real decrease in harm. A key factor in winning was how we have involved parents, families and children in our Zero Harm programme at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH).
Peter Lachman, Deputy Medical Director (Patient Safety) and Dr Allan Goldman, Divisional Director for Critical Care submitted the application and presented at the shortlisted interviews in June. They were at the ceremony to accept the award, along with Toral Pandya (Improvement Manager) and Judith Delaney (Pharmacist) who attended to represent the Trust, which was also shortlisted as a finalist in the Medicine Management category.
Twenty-five winners' awards were handed out on the night. The judges were so impressed with the high standard of entries that seven organisations were also highly commended. GOSH was selected from a shortlist of eight. Over 1,000 healthcare leaders gathered at Grosvenor House, London on Tuesday 9 July 2013 for the celebratory event.
Jenni Middleton, Editor of Nursing Times said: "You have achieved success already, as your presence here tonight confirms. You have accomplished something truly special - your efforts have given your patients and their families and friends a better experience, a safer experience, a more integrated experience of healthcare."
Alastair McLellan, Editor of the Health Service Journal said: "The 120 companies who have been shortlisted for a Patient Safety Award are the vanguard of renewed focus on patient safety which is saving lives and improving outcomes across the service."
Before the presentations, a speech was given by special guest Robert Francis QC, who chaired the public inquiry into the standard of care at Stafford hospital.
