GOSH patients feature in ITV documentary ‘Raining in my Heart’
15 Apr 2015, 11:10 a.m.
A one-off documentary, broadcast tonight on ITV, is set to follow three GOSH patients over two years while they are being treated at the hospital for rare and high risk cancers.
Raining in my Heart meets Sophie and Fabian, both 11, who have exhausted all traditional treatments for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and are set to become some of the first children in the world to try experimental immunotherapy at Great Ormond Street Hospital. It also features three-year-old Chloe who has neuroblastoma and is on an antibody trial as a part of standard treatment to try to prevent her relapsing, something that is common in patients with high risk neuroblastoma.
Filmed from the children’s perspectives, the documentary focusses on how a cancer diagnosis affects the lives of patients, siblings and the wider family and how they make the difficult decision to try such new treatments. The film features trials run by GOSH clinicians, Dr Persis Amrolia, who is pioneering immunotherapy treatment for aggressive leukaemia, and Dr Daniel Morgenstern, who focusses on neuroblastoma.
The programme touches on some of the most cutting edge trials in cancer treatment. It highlights children who are medical pioneers, helping to develop treatments that could dramatically improve cancer care for children in the future.
Watch ‘Raining in My Heart’ tonight, ITV One, 10:40pm
