Dr Peter Steer has been appointed as Chief Executive of Great Ormond Street Hospital.
Dr Steer comes to Great Ormond Street Hospital from Queensland, Australia where he has been the Chief Executive of Children’s Health Queensland Hospital and Health Service since 2009. This hospital group includes the Royal Children’s Hospital Brisbane - a 200 bed specialist paediatric facility.
Dr Steer is also a Professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Queensland, and has a national role as a board member of the Australian Provincial Council on Children's Health, providing strategic planning advice to the Ministry of Health and long-term care on child health issues.
He has a long and distinguished career as a neonatologist, senior medical administrator and academic both in Australia and in Canada. Between 2003 and 2008 he was President of McMaster Children's Hospital and chaired the Department of Paediatrics at McMaster University.
Welcoming the new appointment, Baroness Blackstone, Chairman of Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust said: “I am delighted that Peter has agreed to join us. He has an impressive track record of successfully leading a specialist paediatric hospital group for some years. He will provide a powerful combination of management, clinical and academic experience as the Chief Executive here.”
Dr Steer said: “It’s a privilege to be joining Great Ormond Street Hospital. I am very excited to have the opportunity to be part of an organisation with such credibility and that has done so much to change the outcomes for some of the sickest children in the UK, indeed in the world.
“I am hoping that the combination of my academic, clinical and leadership experience will bring real value to the organisation.”
Dr Steer will join the Trust on 1 January 2015. The current interim Chief Executive, Julian Nettel, will remain in post until then.
