Funding and opportunities

In general, the NIHR GOSH BRC provides funding for research projects through open and competitive funding calls, which can be found below.

In some exceptional circumstances, we may consider ad-hoc proposals for funding outside of advertised funding calls. These will only be considered if evidence can be presented to demonstrate the circumstances are exceptional. Examples could include but are not limited to: a highly innovative proposal with clear proof of concept (e.g. first in world/first in child intervention, publication of early stages of research in a high impact journal), an area of unexpectedly urgent unmet medical need (e.g. COVID-19 pandemic) or a gap in funding arisen by inability of a previously peer-reviewed award to be fully delivered by another funder.

Before submitting an application we strongly advise that you read and understand the eligibility criteria for each of the respective funding opportunities. If you have any questions please email us. Please also note the following general points:

Grant funding is inclusive of VAT. The funding is allocated annually, and as per NHS financial regulations, each year’s funding must be spent within the financial year and completely invoiced by 20 March of that financial year. Any invoices received in the next financial year cannot be processed. Please note that no funds can be carried over. Each subsequent year’s funding is contingent on adherence to the terms and conditions.

Expenditure will be reviewed quarterly and any underspend assessed. If there is a significant unjustified underspend by the final quarter of the financial year, the remaining funding will be retracted.
