Dominic Thompson
Mr Dominic Thompson is a Consultant in Paediatric Neurosurgery and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Child Health.
Teaching
Mr Thompson is a regular faculty member on International Training courses in Paediatric neurosurgery.
He has written numerous chapters for texts on paediatric neurosurgery and neurology.
Specialisms
Spinal Dysraphism: Mr Thompson has a longstanding interest in developmental abnormalities of the spinal cord, in particular spinal dysraphism. He has previously spent part of his training in Paris, Chicago and California in order to pursue this interest and observe other models for the multidisciplinary management of these conditions. He runs a regular multidisciplinary clinic for the management of spinal dysraphism. The clinic incorporates Nurse Consultants (myelomeningocele clinic), urology and physiotherapy.
Craniovertebral anomalies: A variety of rare congenital and acquired disorders result in problems at the craniovertebral junction. Treating children with these disorders poses particular challenges. Mr Thompson has an International reputation for the management of these conditions. He is paediatric neurosurgeon to the GOSH monthly complex spine MDT.
Moyamoya disease: Along with Dr Vijeya Ganesan (paediatric neurologist) Mr Thompson runs a clinic for the evaluation of children with moyamoya disease. Mr Thompson has a large experience of surgical revascularisation procedures for childhood moyamoya disease.
Qualifications

Mr Thompson trained at Charing Cross Hospital, London. He was demonstrator in Anatomy before embarking on his surgical career. His neurosurgical training was at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square; The Atkinson Morley’s Hospital, Wimbledon and Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). He was fellow in craniofacial surgery at GOSH from 1993-4. He has been a consultant at GOSH since 1998.

Research Interests
Clinical research in Paediatric neurosurgery.
Developmental anomalies of the paediatric spine and spinal cord. Research collaboration with the Department of developmental biology at the Institute of Child Health in basic research into neural tube defects and spinal dysraphism.
Mr Thompson has authored a number of peer reviewed articles on various aspects of paediatric neurosurgery.
