GOSH and ICH co-hosted the first Paediatric Summer School on 23rd - 25th July this year.
There was a fantastic turnout of almost 60 medical students, foundation doctors and trainee advanced nurse practitioners, hearing a wide range of talks on the joys and highlights of working in paediatric medical specialities, the range of sub-specialties and the challenges for the profession to face going forward.
Speakers included Anthony Bennett talking about how paediatric staff saved his life after multiple cardiac arrests and an ECMO run. Caroline Fertleman, Holly the Rabbit and Theo talking about why to do paediatrics (including the ward pet and infant perspectives!), the GOSH Young People’s Forum giving their perspective on how to communicate with Children and Young People and what matters to them, and Chris Fox talking about What is the impact of Paediatric Care.
The wide range of specialties discussed and the fact that all of the speakers were friendly and obviously passionate about their field.
Lots of enthusiasm and information about the benefits of a career in paediatrics I left feeling inspired and excited which is infinitely more valuable in my eyes than hearing the ins and outs of every single paediatric sub-specialty.
The course made me feel more enthusiastic about a career in paediatrics and the talks opened my eyes to new opportunities.
Really useful to get information on career pathways that are often difficult and complex for sub-specialities and to get it outlined and discuss what it includes as a career. Also great to hear people passionately explain why they chose paeds esp about the journey and getting to know patients over a long period of time.
The best thing was to hear people’s honest opinions. Everyone acknowledged it was hard work but there were silver linings e.g. OOPEs and the teams they worked in. It made me feel reassured about wanting to specialise in paediatrics.
The enthusiasm of the speakers who really provided insight into their careers and helped introduce us to careers and opportunities in paediatrics that we might not have heard about. Their approachability so we could ask questions too was great. What I enjoyed most were the GOSH patients who came in to speak on their experiences, how it had changed them, and gave valuable insight on how their care could be better and what they appreciated.
Hearing from patients/Young People's Forum. An absolute credit to themselves, family and the YPF. The most inspiring and enjoyable part of the summer school. Useful to have an overview of the different sub-specialties. Very interesting perspective offered re CAMHS provision within paediatrics. Useful overview to hear about different doctors' paths to becoming paediatrician. Very refreshing to be encouraged to take time out of training!!
